Bucking the Un-Employment Trend

In just the last couple weeks, I’m happy to see that we have hired several new people in our Wisconsin operation. So welcome Joanne, Tony, Liz, Thomas and Jennifer! I welcome you to our team and to our DNL culture. I hope you find the fulfillment, happiness and fun that I always want our company to provide.

We hire great new people all the time, but I decided to call it out here because there is such a tremendous amount of worry and concern in our country over jobs. Not that there is not cause for it. Every one of us knows people who have been affected by this horrific economy. Just today I heard from two of my top people Craig Brey and Stephen McNelly who are both out on business trips, Craig in St Louis scouting retail locations and Steve in Las Vegas working on Miss USA 2010. Both of them told me how struck they were at the number of closed retail stores, the lack of traffic, and in Vegas, the dead casinos. It’s truly tough times when even the hard-core gamblers are feeling the pinch.

My point is, there are great companies out there that are growing and hiring. We are constantly looking for web developers, programmers, excellent customer service people, etc. But, you have to have the right skills and the right attitude.

So - Get 21st century skills. Find innovative companies that are cutting a new path. They DO exist. Then approach them with energy, good communication, enthusiasm and a can-do attitude. I know these are old platitudes, and I don’t want to sound like a self-help book, but they are true. One of the people we just hired, Liz Pughes, beat out candidates with more experience and better resumes just because of her energy level. She just willed herself into the job by blowing us away with her dynamicism. And, if I had to bet, I’d say she’s going to be a force to be reckoned with in the company in months and years to come,

Don’t give up. Adapt and overcome.
